As the Yankees stumble towards their worst season in over 30 years, many wonder exactly how the franchise will be able to turn things around without a rebuild.
With declining veterans like Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu under contract for years to come, the core of the team has eroded, yet will be hard to offload. Meanwhile, the farm system, at least at the upper levels, isn’t highly touted, providing little hope for reinforcements from within.
Taking all of that into account, Sal believes the Yankees are in an ominous spot, to say the least.
“They only have a few assets. They are in worse shape now than the Mets were before Steve Cohen bought them,” Sal said. “We talked about what Cohen had to do, spend money in free agency to get them back to respectability…the Yankees don’t spend the way they used to, and even if they could spend, I don’t know if they could buy their way out.”
The Yankees stood pat at the trade deadline, mainly because they didn’t feel a few added pieces would get them over the hump, nor did they have desirable trade chips in the event they chose to sell. By not selling, the Yanks weren’t able to improve their farm system, leaving little reason for hope that things won’t get worse before they get better.
“They don’t draft and develop the way you need to in order to have sustained success,” Sal said. “Where are these young guys? We’ve seen them already.
“Peraza, Cabrera, Volpe, Everson Pereira is another one, we’ve heard about the same thing for years with all these guys. Frazier, Andujar, Gleyber, it hasn’t happened. The trades the GM has made haven’t worked. How are you getting better?”
