Sal: Yankees operating under same 'financial restraints' as they have in recent years

After the Yankees missed out on Corbin Burnes, Sal wonders if the Evil Empire ever really had any chance of returning this winter.

Many Yankee fans hoped the team of old would return after making a blockbuster trade for Juan Soto, but since then, Sal has yet to see anything that suggests New York is operating any differently, at least financially, than they have over the last five years.

“The Yankees have not made a move yet that shows me that they’re not concerned about spending,” Sal said. “Not one of the moves they’ve made so far has shown me ‘You know what? Spending and luxury tax threshold be damned.’”

Sal is still convinced Soto is a true rental, and doesn’t like the Yankees’ odds of re-signing him. If that’s the case, and Marcus Stroman being the only notable free agent signing this winter, are the Yankees really any different with their spending after a disastrous 82-80 season?

“They’ve talked about the luxury tax threshold in years past,” Sal said. “They went out and got a guy who is in his walk year in Soto. They talked about this being an all-in year and they’ll worry about Soto at the end of the year…they’re operating under the same restraints that they have been for the last several years.”
