The Yankees, in a season that has been off to a brutal start, seemed to hit a new low on Monday night, as Aaron Boone’s decision to pull Domingo German in the ninth inning backfired with Clay Holmes blowing a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning.
The devastating 3-2 loss came hours after Boone revealed that Jonathan Loaisiga would be out until at least August due to surgery to return a bone spur, and Aaron Judge would be placed on the 10-day IL with his mild hip strain.
In short, as Sal Licata noted, the Bombers are a mess.
“Horrible loss for the Yankees,” Sal said. “You look at their lineup, it’s pathetic. The Yankees are in complete disarray right now.
“They’re down right now, and it doesn’t feel like it can get any worse.”
Of course, it can get worse, as the Yankees have two series coming up against the first-place Rays, and more losses could bury their AL East chances before Memorial Day.
“The way things are looking right now,” Sal said. “It can even be worse pretty soon for the Yankees.”
It was hard to believe the Yanks being in such a spot after a breezy Opening Day, but as Sal notes, the undercurrent of unresolved issues in the offseason always had a risk of flaring up, and it didn’t take long.
“With no Judge now on top of no Stanton, the Yankees are thin,” Sal said. “The Yankees needed an outfielder coming in…they stuck with what they’ve had, and it was a big mistake.”
