Sal: Yankees sending message that they will be atop American League 'when all is said and done'

The shorthanded Yankees lost another player to the IL on Thursday in Jose Trevino, but won another game against the rival Blue Jays, taking three of four in Toronto.

Suddenly, the Yanks are just 6.5 games back of the league-leading Rays, who have dropped six of their last 10 after two straight losses to the Mets.

Sal Licata says Thursday’s win for the Bombers is just another sign that the Yankees are starting to look like the team he expected them to be, which is the top team in the American League.

“The Yankees are sending a message,” Sal said. “I really feel that the Yankees are gonna be the best team when it’s all said and done, at least in the American League. We’ve seen it. We saw the Yankees, who are clearly not at their best, take on some of the best that the American league has to offer, and they handled them.”

The Yankees have consistently fallen short in the AL in recent years, looking clearly inferior to teams like the Astros, Rays, and Red Sox, dating back to 2018. But Sal says this will be the year that they come out as the cream of the crop.

“Are you really scared of Texas? I’m not,” Sal said. “Houston, not looking as great as they did, although they’re starting to play better and will be a thorn in the Yankees side until they prove otherwise. But really, the toughest competition is within their own division, and they’ve handled it. and they’re only going to get better and healthier, whether it’s [Carlos] Rodon, Giancarlo [Stanton], in the bullpen.

“And you also know that Brian Cashman, love him or hate him, is going to be aggressive in trying to improve this ballclub when the time comes.”
