Sal: Yankees should be embarrassed if they punt on season

BT, and many Yankee fans, want the team to sell and start over, preferably with a new GM and manager.

Sal calls that a loser mentality.

While his co-host hopes for his team to lose and spark the changes he feels are necessary for long-term success, Sal can’t believe a fanbase would be so eager to mail it in when their team is just 3.5 games back of a playoff spot and still two months left in the season.

“They have [Gerrit] Cole, [Carlos] Rodon, the best bullpen in baseball, they have one of the best players in baseball in Aaron Judge,” Sal said. “If the Yankees give up on the opportunity to make the postseason, then they’re even more clueless than I thought as an organization.”

The red-hot Cubs have turned into buyers, adding Jeimer Candelario on Monday, while the Angels, just a half game ahead of the Yankees, have been one of the most aggressive teams at the deadline. If those teams are making a push and the Yanks decide to sell, Sal says their fans should be embarrassed.

“This may be the closest they get to the postseason in the next five years,” Sal said. “It’s not the Yankees fans’ birthright to be in the postseason. You’re 3.5 games back of a playoff spot. Any team in baseball would be going for it, but yet the high and mighty Yankees would spit at it? They’re gonna be sellers when the playoffs are right there for them? Come on, that would be an embarrassment.

“Name me one team that would be three games back with two months to go that would sell!”
