Stats show just how rough of a night Laz Diaz had behind the plate before Aaron Boone tirade

Aaron Boone had a big problem with home plate umpire Laz Diaz’s strike zone when he was ejected on Monday night, and it seems like Boone’s frustration was justified.

The Twitter account Umpire Scorecards released its daily reports on Tuesday morning, and Diaz’s report card showed some glaring misses, and some dreadful stats. As Boone argued during Tuesday’s loss, Dia missed several calls that were ruled strikes despite being well off the outside corner to righties, including in crucial times, none more notable than when DJ LeMahieu was rung up on a fastball well off the plate with runners on the corners and one out in the top of the seventh, with the Yanks trailing by one.

Another key miss came in the second, when Jake Bauers was put behind 0-1 with the bases loaded after taking a pitch that looked outside.

Per Umpire Scorecards, Diaz finished the night with a dreadful called strike accuracy of 66 percent, 22 percent below the average, as 17 of 50 called strikes were “true balls.”

Boone was ejected after drawing a line in the dirt off of home plate to show where Diaz was calling strikes, then mocked Diaz’s punchout gesture in animated fashion.
