We could soon be calling Anthony Volpe Tony Two-Times, as he is now officially a candidate to win back-to-back Gold Gloves.
Rawlings released its list of three Gold Glove finalists at each position on Tuesday, and Volpe is one of three shortstops, and three Yankees – including outfielders Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo – with a chance to win some hardware.
On the NL side, a former Yankee is the lone Mets finalist, with Luis Severino up for the pitching Gold Glove.
Volpe, who won the award as a rookie, is up against the two shortstops he has faced this postseason – Cleveland’s Brayan Rocchio and Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. – for this year’s award. Volpe, at 13 outs above average, was second to Witt (+16) at that category, and he was sixth in the AL with +6 Defensive Runs Saved (Rocchio was second, Witt tied for 14th).
Soto was a mixed bag according to defensive metrics, as he was minus-1 in DRS and minus-5 in Outs Above Average, but also led all right fielders in putouts and tied for the AL lead with nine assists. This is Soto’s third time as a finalist – he was up for the NL Award in left field in 2019 and right field in 2022 – and is up against Jo Adell of the Angels and Boston’s Wilyer Abreu, who led all AL RF in DRS and tied with Soto for the lead in assists.
Verdugo was second in putouts and fifth in assists among AL left fielders, and he was fifth in DRS despite being league average in OAA. He is up for this award for the second straight year – he was a finalist in RF in 2023 – and is up against Cleveland’s Steven Jawn and Baltimore’s Colton Cowser.
Severino tied for third among NL Pitchers with 5 Defensive Runs Saved, and his competition in his first crack at a Gold Glove is defending winner Zack Wheeler of the Phillies and Atlanta’s Chris Sale – the likely top two finishers in Cy Young Award voting.
