The Yankees are riding a nine-game winning streak heading into a challenging early quiz in the 2022 season, and Brandon Tierney says this team already has a different feel than previous installments.
“They’ve been boring, they’ve been heavy-footed on the bases, and their strikeout rate, alarming,” Tierney said of the Yankee teams of recent past that were consistently outed early in the playoffs.
But now, Tierney sees a new version of the Yankees that contradicts the “boring” label he saw from last year’s group. Sure, the collective boom of previous lineups is still there, as the Yanks ended the weekend tied for the league lead in home runs, but the Yanks are now in the middle of the pack in strikeouts, as opposed to be near the top of the leaderboard, are in the top 10 in walks, and have more aggression on the bases.
“The Yankees are a lot more exciting, and far less predictable,” Tierney said during Monday’s show. “They do seem on the most basic level, based on who they’ve beaten, more viable to truly be in the hunt. I’m starting to change my convictions about this team. Without overreacting, the Yankees look good.
“They’ve looked good before. But they look different, and still look good.”
Tougher tests are certain to come, starting Monday against the Blue Jays, but this current nine-game winning streak has started to win over Tierney, who at the very least can say that this team is more fun to watch than last year’s group.
“Without going over the top, it’s just a more enjoyable watch, and a more believable watch, meaning it just seems more sustainable,” Tierney said.
“It feels a little different this year.”
