Anthony Volpe went 0-for-4 in Wednesday night’s loss to the Mariners, dropping his season batting average to .194.
Having eclipsed 200 at-bats on the season, Tiki says there is enough of a sample size to start getting worried about the team’s top prospect and hyped rookie shortstop.
“He hasn’t really gotten above .200 this season, he’s hit some home runs, but his OPS is way down there,” Tiki said. “He’s having a really rough season. He’s booted seven of 200 chances, he’s got seven errors.
“I don’t want to get on him, because he’s a young kid. But I think the Yankees are getting ready to have an Anthony Volpe problem.”
Tiki says Volpe isn’t getting sent down, but with reinforcements on the way and the recent improved play of Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Volpe could at least cede some playing time after the Yankees have let him play through some early growing pains at 22 years old.
“I’m not saying send him down or that he’s overmatched…but I’m just gonna keep it real,” Tiki said. “I’ve went through this. At some point, you hit this lull. It’s happening early for Anthony Volpe, where it comes time for the fans to start getting on you, and for the media to start drilling into the negativity.
“If Antony Volpe is going to be a sub-.200 hitter who occasionally runs into a home run, then he is not serving his purpose for this Yankees team. It’s time to start looking at Anthony Volpe and some of the issues he has.”
