On Thursday, Tiki broached the possibility of the Yankees having themselves and Anthony Volpe problem, given the hyped rookie’s slow start to the season.
On Friday, Tiki took it a step further, suggesting the 22-year-old might be better off going back to the minors to get his swing corrected.
“He’s just not playing great,” Tiki said. “It feels like at the plate, his mechanics are jacked. I remember saying this when we first started seeing him this season. Right before the pitch, he drops down. I guess it creates power…I think there’s too much movement in his swing and his approach to at-bats.
“While I am not saying ‘send Anthony Volpe down because of his struggles,’ I might be saying ‘Send Anthony Volpe down because he has to fix his swing.’ I feel like he needs to fix his swing, otherwise he’s not going to hit consistently. I’m worried he’s gonna get frustrated and lost because he can’t hit like that.”
Tiki doesn’t like how Volpe’s swing has looked to start his rookie year, and believes it has played a major part in his sub-.200 batting average.
“It’s clearly wrong,” Tiki said. “That’s why he can’t catch up to high fastballs. How do you fix that?”
BT responded with an ominous outlook, at least pertaining to this season.
“That’s not a tweak, it’s an overhaul,” BT said. “That’s a philosophical overhaul. That’s not a midseason correction.”
