The Yankees seem to be done with their offseason, at least in terms of big moves, meaning their biggest splash of the winter remains the blockbuster trade for Juan Soto.
Morash said, immediately after the trade, that the deal wouldn’t be worth it if Soto isn’t signed to a big extension and becomes a true rental.
Tiki says the trade was still worth it, but agrees that re-signing Soto is now paramount.
“I still have doubts that they’re gonna be able to sign him,” Tiki said. “If you’re gonna get him, you have to keep him.”
For that reason, Tiki believes the Yankees need to prioritize long-term competitiveness for their roster, and not going all in on one season while sacrificing organizational depth in the process.
“Of course it’s worth the risk. I think it’s really hard to plan to win in a year,” Tiki said. “I think an all-in season makes you feel like ‘We’re a player away, and we can win.’ The Yankees aren’t…there’s more to them not being competitive in the postseason, than just that.
“One year planning doesn’t create sustained success. That’s the challenge.”
