Aaron Boone gave a rundown on some of the Yankees’ injured pitchers on Wednesday, and a pair of lefty relievers appear to be nearing a return.
Darren O’Day, who has been sidelined since April 29 with a rotator cuff strain, has continued his bullpen sessions after beginning a throwing program on May 22, and if all goes well with Wednesday’s session, his next stop could be a rehab assignment.
“O’Day throwing another bullpen today,” Boone said. “If all goes well, he could potentially be on a rehab assignment as early as this weekend.”
Justin Wilson has been on the IL since late May with a hamstring strain, and he is also looking to be headed toward a rehab assignment in the near future.
“Willy threw another bullpen yesterday,” Boone said. “I think he’s scheduled to throw another bullpen Friday, and if that goes well, he could potentially be in a live or rehab scenario as well.”
Corey Kluber is not close to a return, has he has yet to progress from playing catch on flat ground. He will still have to advance to a further distance, pitching off a mound and throwing bullpen sessions before beginning a rehab assignment. The initial outlook was two months for Kluber’s absence after leaving his start on May 25 with a strained shoulder.
“Corey is still just in a throwing program, still just playing catch and doing fine,” Boone said. “But hasn’t really advanced much beyond 60 feet, where he’s pretty much throwing every day and working out.”
