The Yankees are finally starting to show some signs of life offensively, having scored 17 runs over the last two games, and could be getting a big bat back sooner rather than later.
Aaron Boone told reporters on Thursday that Luke Voit could begin his rehab assignment as early as Sunday, as the first baseman looks to make his return from a strained oblique. If he were to start his assignment then, he could be back with the Yanks by the beginning of the following week.
“Luke, if everything continues to progress this week, he can start a rehab assignment as early as Sunday,” Boone said. “We’ll probably build him up that whole week. I think he’s either gonna start his rehab either Sunday or Tuesday…if he started him Sunday, then he’d have Monday off and then go Tuesday, probably play that whole week and hopefully get him back by the start of that following week.”
Zack Britton appears to be even closer to a return, as Boone said there is a chance the lefty reliever could be with the team by the end of the current road trip, which ends next Thursday against the Blue Jays.
Britton is making another rehab appearance on Thursday night.
“Yeah, there’s definitely a chance he can be back on this road trip,” Boone said. “We’ll evaluate where he is and see how he’s doing after tonight and make a decision if we want him to have one or two more…but he’s getting towards the back end, or maybe even the end, of his rehab assignment.”
Luis Severino is also continuing his rehab assignment, as the righty is slated to pitch again on Saturday. Boone said Severino will pitch every sixth day, but there could be a time during his rehab assignment that he pitches again after five days, as he continues to near a return from Tommy John surgery.
