Prior to the 2023 season, Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said he would never want to play for the Yankees during his career, regardless of the team’s history and current window of contention.
With Toronto in town to face the Yanks on Friday, Guerrero was asked why he was so adamant about never putting on the pinstripes.
“It’s a personal thing,” Guerrero said, via MLB.com. “It goes back with my family. That’s my decision and I will never change that.”
Guerrero’s father enjoyed a Hall of Fame career that never included the Yanks, though it’s possible Guerrero’s gripe could stem from something that happened during his father’s playing career. Nevertheless, if Guerrero does become a free agent in 2026, it doesn’t sound like he will be coming to New York, though he doesn’t seem to mind playing there as a visitor.
“Since you are a little kid, you dream of playing at Yankee Stadium,” Guerrero said. “Yankee Stadium is always a stadium you want to go to, you want to perform, you want to hit. That’s the mentality all the time when I come here.”
