Andrew Velazquez is from The Bronx, and the hometown boy who has been on a roll for the Yankees added another dream come true to his resume Saturday - hitting his first career home run with his family in attendance.
Entering Saturday, Velazquez had 143 career plate appearances without going deep, and he was 0-for-3 Saturday against the Twins when he stepped up to the plate to lead off the eighth…and promptly hit a bullet into the right field seats:
“Andrew, Merry Andrew” was John Sterling’s call, but even more poignant was the FS1 broadcast, which captured Velazquez’s family in attendance taking video of the at-bat, cheering, and then his mom crying tears of joy after seeing her son’s first big fly.
A moment Velazquez, his family, and Yankees fans will never forget.
