The Yankees look poised to fall behind in the ninth inning on Friday night after running themselves into outs on the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but instead escaped a no-out jam on one pitch.
After Aroldis Chapman walked Yermin Mercedes to lead off the ninth and fumbled a sac bunt attempt by Leury Garcia to put runners on first and second with nobody out, the Yankees escaped the threat unscathed with a 5-4-3 triple play before walking off with a win in the bottom of the ninth.
Looking to limit the damage, Chapman avoided it completely by forcing Andrew Vaughn to rip a hard grounder to Gio Urshela, who quickly stepped on third and fired to Rougned Odor at second, who finished the around-the-horn triple play with a bullet to Luke Voit at first to end the inning.
The triple play comes just two nights after Corey Kluber pitched the franchise’s first no-hitter since 1999, continuing a historic week for the Yanks.
The Bombers sent the Yankee Stadium fans home happy in the bottom of the ninth with three consecutive singles by Aaron Judge, Urshela and Gleyber Torres, who plated Judge with a walk-off single.
It was the first time the Yankees turned a triple play since April 2014 against the Rays, when the fielders involved were Yangervis Solarte (who fielded a hard grounder at third much like Urshela), Brian Roberts and Scott Sizemore.
