Boomer & Gio: What was Juan Soto saying with free agency comments after milestone home run?

Juan Soto told reporters after Tuesday’s Yankee win that homering in Seattle to check off the last ballpark he had not yet gone deep in was a great accomplishment going into free agency this winter.

It was a comment that gave some Yankee fans a jolt of fear and discomfort, as it offered a reminder that Soto is not guaranteed to be in pinstripes beyond this season, even as he reached the 40-homer mark and continues a historic season alongside Aaron Judge, as the duo have become the only pair in Yankee history to both hit 40 home runs in a season other than Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle/Roger Maris.

Is it a real cause for concern in the Bronx? Gio says it is at least a reminder that Soto will be looking for the biggest payday.

“You know what these guys think about,” Gio said. “Cash.”

For Boomer, he believes Soto is going to command a type of contract that will take the Yankees out of the running, as the Bombers already have Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Giancarlo Stanton to big contracts.
But Soto’s price is only going up as his numbers become more and more impressive.

“Forty [home runs], 103 [RBI], 25 [years old], that’s how you go into free agency right there,” Boomer said. “If he has a monster postseason, oof. Do you think he makes more than $500 million. It would have to be, right?

“I just don’t see the Yankees paying it.”
