Clay Holmes spoiled Anthony Volpe’s first career home run on Friday night, allowing two runs in the eighth inning to turn a 3-2 lead into an eventual 4-3 loss, as the Yankees dropped consecutive games for the first time this season.
In one inning of work, Holmes allowed two runs on two hits, as well as a walk, including a two-run double off the bat of Carlos Correa to silence the Bronx crowd.
For Holmes, it was his second time this season giving up multiple runs in an outing, and was the continuation of troubling performances since the second half of last season. Just a year ago, Holmes was rising as one of the most dominant closers in baseball, but injuries and a lack of command have now put Holmes in the doghouse for many Yankee fans.
In fact, after Friday’s outing, many fans declared themselves done with Holmes as the team’s closer, or pitching in high-leverage spots like he was in the eighth inning on Friday.
