Aaron Boone on 'awful ending' to familiar foe: 'They're clearly setting the mark in this league'

The Yankees are done for the season, an all-too-familiar sentiment for a team and a core that believed championships were on the horizon after coming one game short of the World Series in 2017.

Since then, the team has gone backward, losing in six games to the Astros in 2019, then getting swept by Houston in 2022.

The Yankees, under Aaron Boone, have still not been able to get as close to the Fall Classic as the franchise was under Joe Girardi at the birth of the Baby Bombers era.

“It's an awful day,” Boone said. “An awful ending.

“It always stings. It hurts. No one I’d rather do it with than those guys in there and how together they are, so you kind of lean on each other in there. But the ending, as I’ve said it before, it’s cruel.

“So much goes into it and trying to climb to that top of the mountain. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to get there yet. I know it will continue to motivate everyone in there to try and get there. That’s what you work for…but the ending is terrible.”

Boone signed a new contract before this season and will likely be back, but once again, the Bombers are closing up shop for the winter while still searching for their first American League pennant since 2009. After a committed rebuild that went much quicker than expected six years ago, the Yanks are still trying to put together a group that is widely considered to be the best in the league.

Instead, they have been consistently outclassed by a franchise that nailed their own rebuild, and created a sustained winner.

“We got beat by a better team,” Boone said. “They're clearly setting the mark in this league that we're aspiring to get to.”
