Nestor Cortes allowed just one run over five innings of work in Tuesday’s dramatic win over the Pirates, just days after Gerrit Cole was knocked around in Milwaukee, continuing to get bit by the long ball.
But Aaron Boone, appearing on “The Show” podcast with Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman, still says it will be Cole getting the ball in game one of a playoff series come October.
“Yeah, Cole would be,” Boone said. “And we feel great about Nestor obviously too. And hopefully [Luis Severino] getting back here and getting a few starts under his belt here at the back end, put him in that mix too.”
Severino makes his Yankee return from the 60-day IL on Wednesday, while Frankie Montas was placed on the 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation. There is still much to be determined about how New York’s playoff rotation will look, but Boone knows who his playoff ace will be.
“We’ve got a couple weeks to go there and we’ve got to see how we get there and how we get in,” Boone said. “Those things always affect how you line things up. But hopefully we’re in a position to line it up how we want.”
