Aaron Boone was ejected for the fifth time this season when a strike was called on DJ LeMahieu, who was certain he had just drawn a walk on a 3-1 pitch that appeared to be well above the strike zone.
The Yankees, in desperate need of offense and baserunners without Aaron Judge, were left with a runner on and two out instead of two on and one out, with the heart of the order coming to bat.
Boone voiced his frustration to home plate umpire Dan Merzel, who promptly ejected Boone, and the quick hook only made the Yankees manager more incensed.
“You’ve got to have thicker skin than that,” Boone said. “You’ve got to have a little bit of room to let us say something.”
Boone made sure to note that he respects Merzel as a young, up-and-coming umpire (he made his debut in 2020), but to be thrown out that quickly, Boone said it was “ridiculous.”
“That’s just wrong in my opinion, especially coming from what I think’s got a chance to be a really good young umpire,” Boone said. “That’s ridiculous.
“That rope and that leash was very short. I had a real problem with that.”
