The Yankees are back on track after a rough start to the season, and Sal says Aaron Boone deserves major props for injecting life back into the Bombers.
“Boone is as entertaining of a manager as anyone in the game right now,” Sal said, adding that Boone is a “new-aged version” of classic fiery managers like Billy Martin and Lou Piniella.
“A lot of times with replay and how you can’t argue balls and strikes, is does take away from what we used to get into as far as managers going out there and complaining and getting tossed, but Aaron Boone has found a way.”
Sure, Boone has his shortcomings in terms of in-game managing, but Sal applauds the job he has done so far this season, and says the often-criticized skipper deserves his praise.
“I love that version of Boone, but Boone uses too much of the data,” Sal said. “Boone knows what he’s doing two or three weeks from now. I don’t understand how you can do that. Especially in baseball.
“But I don’t think Aaron Boone is a problem with this team…I think Boone has done a nice job with protecting his players, being a fiery leader, and I feel like there is an edge to this Yankees team that might have been missing in years past…I feel like Boone has helped bring that edge. He’s gotten more comfortable with that this year.”
