Aaron Boone defended Isiah Kiner-Falefa after his costly error immediately led to what would be the game-winning home run by Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday night, and Sal didn’t want to hear anything about Kiner-Falefa’s defensive metrics.
“Come on, dude,” Sal said. “I get it, but come on. You’ve watched baseball all your life! You should know what a real, good defensive shortstop looks like. He’s not one of them. Not a knock, it’s reality.”
Boone said that Kiner-Falefa is one of the best shortstops in the majors after making his 12th error of the season, and that was a declaration Sal couldn’t let slide.
“Based on what, metrics?” Sal said. “Take those metrics and do you know what with them. Get outta here. Catch the freaking ball! It’s a routine ground ball. This guy was a Gold Glove third baseman, and he can’t make that play?”
