The Yankees keep losing, and Aaron Boone keeps publicly portraying an unshakable belief that his team will get back to their winning ways, which he believes is the true version of themselves.
But Jerry and Gio wonder if that relentless pursuit of the silver lining can be unproductive when the team is struggling and in need of a wake-up call.
If you ask Gio, it’s the wrong way to go about things.
“Aaron Boone doesn’t strike me as the guy who can fix the big problem,” Gio said. “When things start to fall apart, his positivity and his optimism that he shows us publicly that I’m sure he’s doing privately in the clubhouse, I don’t think that works.”
Jerry noted Joe Torre’s calm demeanor throughout his accomplished tenure as Yankee manager, but Gio believes even Torre knew when to call out his group when they weren’t playing to their potential, and isn’t sure if Boone does that behind closed doors.
“I don’t think putting a positive spin on everything that is going on right now works,” Gio said. “He’s too low-energy, he’s too even-keeled, I don’t think he’s someone who’s gonna inspire any sort of comeback in the team. He’s not someone who’s gonna call that team meeting or whatever…he’s not gonna be the guy that throws the chair and say ‘We suck, figure it out, this is embarrassing. We’re the New York Yankees. What’s going on?’
“He referenced the last 10 days in his postgame press conference. It hasn’t been 10 days, it’s been since early July that they’ve been this bad. Let’s get some self-awareness here and figure this out!”
