A frustrated Aaron Boone said the Yankees should be “embarrassed” after a potential “rock bottom” loss to the Rays on Friday night, a 9-0 defeat when New York needed to make a statement that it wasn’t about to let Tampa take its quickly-vanishing division lead.
“That’s an embarrassing loss,” Boone said. “Hopefully one of those rock bottom situations where you should be pissed off and embarrassed. We set a better standard around here.
“Domingo [German] pitched a heck of a game…we just gotta be better, period. We obviously got shut down again today.”
German allowed just two earned runs over 6.2 innings of work, but the offense was once again a no-show in the biggest game of the season. Now, Saturday becomes the most important game of the year, at a time in the calendar where many thought the Bombers would be in cruise control as of just a couple months ago. Instead, they are dealing with more embarrassment.
“Just embarrassing when you get beat like that and are going through the struggles we are,” Boone said. “I’m in charge of this team and what we’re going through right now. I know better than anyone that there’s gonna be hard times. I believe the effort is there and the care is there, but we’ve set a better standard that we have to live up to.”
