Anthony Rizzo told Joe Maddon and Tom Verducci after Aaron Judge re-signed with the Yankees that the teammates’ dogs played a role in getting Judge back to New York.
Judge confirmed that to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Monday.
“He was calling me every day, sending me texts every day,” Judge said. “He was working hard.
“He went for my heart. My little Penny, and his dog Kevin, are the best of friends. This is what I had to deal with. Every day, I was getting pics like this.”
Judge and Rizzo both have dachshunds, have worn matching shirts of the dog breed together to the clubhouse, and have been close friends since Rizzo arrived via trade in 2021. Their relationship can continue on as teammates now that both re-signed in free agency this offseason, and Penny and Kevin can continue their friendship as well.
“He played a big part,” Judge said of Rizzo’s role in getting Judge back to the Bronx. “He got his contract out of the way and said, ‘Now we gotta get you locked in.’”
