Aaron Judge has already played 40 games in center field this season, after playing in just 24 over the previous five seasons of his big-league career.
That has been partly out of necessity as Aaron Hicks and Joey Gallo have struggled mightily for much of the season, but Judge has also been strong in center when called upon, and most importantly, has stayed healthy to be able to continue to produce at an MVP level at the plate.
But Sal says the Yanks should consider adding a center fielder to keep some mileage off of Judge as the Bombers approach a second half of the season that could see the division put away early, giving the team a chance to capitalize on some rest for their star outfielder before October.
“I get he likes it out there and that’s their best lineup, but I would look to get another center fielder, at least for defensive purposes, to spell Judge at least a little bit more moving forward,” Sal said. “And once the postseason comes, have him out there every day.”
Jerry believes the Yanks can be fine without adding a center fielder as long as they continue to hold their double-digit lead in the division, and once they get to the final months of the season, Judge could receive regular rest even if it is at the expense of the lineup.
“You will have plenty of opportunities to get him days off…as opposed to being in the grind of a race where you might be behind a game or up a game ahead,” Jerry said.
“Come August or September, you can start giving him a game off every week. I’d rather the day off every week than being moved and playing every day of a race.”
