Gio mocks Aaron Judge for saying 'It's never been about the money'

Aaron Judge was asked on Monday about his looming free agency and contract extension talks with the Yankees, and Judge’s response was a big talking point on Boomer and Gio on Tuesday.

“I play this game because I love it,” Judge said. “I never want to take that for granted. It’s never been about the money. I want to play for the Yankees. I want to be here for a long time. If it works out it works out, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. It’s out of my hands.”

Gio couldn’t help but laugh at that response, even if he understands why the All-Star would be holding out for a better deal than the $213.5 million he was offered before the season.

“It’s never been about the money, except before the season when they offered me $213 million and I said no because I wanted more money,” Gio said sarcastically. “But it’s never been about the money other than that time!

“I don’t blame him for what he’s doing at all. But don’t handle it like this.”

Judge is almost certain to be offered well more than that $213.5 million in free agency, especially if he continues on this near 60-home run pace, so while turning down the contract offer was likely the right move that Judge continues to prove, Gio doesn’t see how Judge can say that his decisions aren’t about money.

“It’s out of my hands,” Gio imitated. “This whole thing is out of my hands, it really is. I have no choices in this or any influence on the matter.

“Sickening.”
