As Aaron Judge continues his quest to make Yankees and American League home run history, and perhaps even a triple crown, speculation rages on about where he will play his home games in 2023.
The Yankees say they will work to keep the perennial MVP candidate in New York, while many expect Judge’s hometown Giants to make a big play after a sub-par 2022.
Asked about “the fellow from New York,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi had this to say, via the San Francisco Chronicle.
“Look, without talking about any specific players, I’ve used the word ‘transition’ a lot in the last few years, and that’s sort of been the state of our roster,” Zaidi said of his Giants, who won 107 games last season but haven’t sniffed that level of success this year.
“We always felt like last offseason and this offseason would be big off-seasons for us in terms of shaping the future of the club and what the roster looks like. And so that continues to be the case, and it’s going to be a big offseason for us. We do have payroll room because we’re a big market, and we have contracts that are ending this offseason. So there’ll be a lot of good options for us.”
Judge will certainly command a big payday, betting on himself before the start of the season after turning down an extension offer from the Yankees that would have paid him $30.5 million per season. With payroll coming off the books in San Francisco, not far from where Judge grew up, expect the Giants to be in play for the face of the Yankee franchise.
