Tiki & Tierney: Has a superstar in his prime like Aaron Judge ever left a New York team?

As Aaron Judge nears Roger Maris’ home run record, he also nears free agency at the end of the season, when excitement over his chase towards baseball history will immediately give way to tension and his uncertain future with the Yankees.

Tiki and Tierney tried to come up with a New York comparison for a star as bright as Judge leaving the Big Apple in their prime, and BT could only come up with one name.

“I know that Darryl left in his prime, but it’s very rare,” BT said of Darryl Strawberry, who signed a deal with his hometown Dodgers after a seventh consecutive All-Star season with the Mets in 1990. “Who was the last New York athlete? Darryl was thought to be dogging some injuries…but he was in his absolute prime.”

Strawberry was 29 years old when he left for Los Angeles (a move he would later say he regretted), but even Strawberry wasn’t putting up the kind of numbers Judge is during his contract year, which leads Tiki and Tierney to believe that there isn’t any comparison.

“What great New York player, in any sport, in his absolute prime, said, I’m leaving?” BT said. All the old Yankees obviously stayed here. Crazy.

“Can you imagine the somber tone? It’s gonna be like a funeral procession if this guy ever left.”
