Back in December of 2021, a video of Aaron Judge hitting off a tee made its rounds on social media, with Judge making a bold declaration to someone off camera.
“Rich, I’m hitting 50 again this year,” Judge said, interrupting his routine before loading up into a swing and smacking the ball off the tee in the indoor batting cage.
Eight months later, Judge has unloaded 50 similar swings to that one in the cage during the offseason, and has already fulfilled his promise with more than a month remaining in the season.
Judge hit his 50th home run of the season on Monday night, driving a ball off the rocks in Anaheim after being carefully pitched around in his previous at-bats. He is right in line with Roger Maris’ record-setting mark of 61 home runs, and after reaching the 50 mark, video of his offseason prediction was circulating once again.
Turns out, Judge was somehow selling himself short.
