Luis Severino has been there to watch Aaron Judge’s rapid ascent to stardom, getting a front-row seat to his historic 2017 season.
So it’s no surprise to Severino when he watches Judge blast his first career walk-off home run off the league’s saves leader on Tuesday night.
“Everybody knows who Aaron Judge is. In 2017, he should have won MVP that year,” Severino said. “No doubt about that. He’s a great hitter.”
Severino, taken out of the game in the fifth, was down in the clubhouse when Judge came up to bat as the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and the righty says he called the home run. He had watched Judge long enough to know one was coming.
“These situations like tonight,” Judge said. “You know Aaron Judge is gonna come through.”
As for Judge’s teammates that have only been watching him for a short while, his walk-off heroics and powerful surge to start the season (he now leads the league with 10 home runs) is equally unsurprising.
“I said this the other day, top notch,” Jose Trevino said. “Off the field, on the field, just overall, probably the best player I’ve played with.
“Watching him go about his business and do his thing, it’s pretty impressive. It’s fun to be a part of it and watch him go about it.”
