The New York Yankees have acquired RHP Clay Holmes from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for infielders Diego Castillo and Hoy Park.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees returned catcher Rob Brantly to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre under the COVID replacement provision.
Holmes, 28, is 3-2 with a 4.93 ERA in 42 innings over 44 relief outings this season. He has been unscored upon in 32 of those 44 outings, and has held righties to a .173/.277/.194 slash line this year. Over four Major League seasons with Pittsburgh (2018-21), he has gone 5-7 with a 5.57 ERA in 91 appearances/four starts, striking out 122 in 119 2/3 innings.
The right-hander is out of minor-league options, and will be arbitration eligible for the first time this winter.
Castillo, 23, is hitting .277 with 11 homers, 32 RBI, 21 walks, and eight steals in 58 games this season. Originally signed as an international free agent in 2014, Castillo is a .269 career hitter in 510 games.
Park, 25, made his MLB debut as a COVID replacement earlier this year, going 0-for-1 and playing two innings in right field. He has been a star at two levels (Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre), however, slashing 307/.452/.530 with 11 homers, 32 RBI, 10 doubles, 52 walks and 10 steals. He was also an international free agent in the 2014 class, and has hit .255 in 556 games in six seasons.
