The Yankees acquired some potential starting depth for some point this season on Friday, adding RHP J.T. Brubaker and a sum of international signing bonus money from the Pirates for a player to be named later.
Brubaker, 30, missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery he had on April 12, and he was placed on the Pirates' 60-day injured list during spring training - so he does not count against the Yankees' current 40-man roster until he returns, which, per reports, is targeted for around the All-Star break.
The righty made his MLB debut in 2020, and in three MLB seasons with the Pirates, he has posted a 4.99 ERA in 63 games (61 starts). In 2022, Brubaker was 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA in 28 starts, with 147 K against 54 walks in 144 innings.
Brubaker, who is making $2.275 million this year in his second turn through arbitration, has four years of MLB service time and two minor-league options, so the Yankees could control him through as far as 2027 depending on how much service time he accrues this season.
