Yankees acquiring 3B Ryan McMahon from Colorado for two pitching prospects

It looks like the Yankees finally have their third baseman: according to multiple reports, the Bombers are acquiring Ryan McMahon from Colorado for two prospects.

Per Mark Feinsand, LHP Griffin Herring and RHP Josh Grosz are the return to Colorado.

McMahon, 30, is slashing .217/.314/.403 with 16 homers, 35 RBI, and 15 doubles in 100 games for the Rockies this year, but he also leads the NL with 127 strikeouts. Those numbers are down a tick from his .242/.325/.397 slash line (with 20 HR and 65 RBI) in his 2024 All-Star season, but McMahon will be a huge defensive upgrade at third.

His lefty bat, which will play in Yankee Stadium as well, will also an offensive boost for a team that has seen its third basemen combine for a .214/.292/.354 slash line with 11 home runs and 40 RBI – numbers that drop dramatically without Jazz Chisholm’s .311/.383/.594 line in 29 games there – with five different players starting games (and six total making appearances) at the hot corner.

And, McMahon is under contract through 2027 at $16 million actual money per year, but his luxury tax hit will be slightly lower as he is only making $12 million this year in the fourth season of a six-year, $70 million deal that carried an $11.667 million AAV.

Herring, 22, was the Yankees’ sixth-round pick in 2024, and the No. 8 prospect in the organization per MLB.com. His pro debut this season has been split evenly between Low-A Tampa and High-A Hudson Valley, and he is 7-3 with a 1.71 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 89 1/3 innings over 16 starts.

Grosz, 22, was an 11th-round pick in 2023 and the No. 21 prospect in the system per MLB.com. He has been at Hudson Valley all year, going 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 87 innings over 16 games (15 starts).
