Yankees activate Gio Urshela from IL

The Yankees officially activated Gio Urshela off the 10-day IL on Thursday, an expected move as Aaron Boone said earlier in the week that the third baseman would likely be back for the start of a crucial road series against the A’s.

Urshela has been nursing a hamstring injury for nearly a month, and hasn’t played since July 31. He had a three-hit game in a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset earlier this week, and picked up another hit on Tuesday night.

The Yankee defense will receive an immediate boost with the return of Urshela, as third base has been manned by Rougned Odor, who hadn’t played the hot corner ever in the majors until this season, in Urshela’s absence. With Urshela at third and Anthony Rizzo at first, the Yankees boast a solid infield defense at the corners.

So far this season, Urshela is slashing .274/.315/.439 with 11 home runs in 84 games.
