The Yankees’ rotation beyond Gerrit Cole has struggled this season, and they may be looking at one potential reinforcement.
According to WFAN insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees were one of several teams to watch Anibal Sanchez’s showcase workout in Florida on Friday. Sanchez held his workout at Florida International University in Miami, and according to Heyman, pitched at 90 MPH while hitting 92.
The 37-year-old held a showcase two weeks ago, but only threw 13 pitches before a cut on his middle finger halted the session early
Sanchez has played 15 seasons in the majors, posting a 4.05 ERA along the way. He spent last season with the Nationals, going 4-5 with a 6.62 ERA in 53 innings over 11 starts, but he was a key piece of the Nats’ World Series run in 2019, going 11-8 with a 3.85 ERA in 30 starts and posting a 2.50 ERA in three postseason starts.
The Yankees got six innings from Domingo German on Thursday, and that was just the second quality start out of 13 by a rotation member not named Gerrit Cole. So far this season, Corey Kluber has yet to complete five innings in any of his four starts, Jameson Taillon has done so once in three starts, and Thursday’s game was the first time German went more than four frames in his three starts.
Jordan Montgomery was the only non-Cole starter to pitch six innings prior to Thursday, having done so twice. All that has added up to the Yankees’ bullpen pitching 79 innings over their first 18 games, compared to only 83 for the five members of the rotation.
