Yankees announce Nick Nelson as Friday's starter in bullpen game

The Yankees will be going with an opener for the first time this season when they take on the Rays Friday night.

The Yanks, who have struggled to get length from any of their starting pitching outside of Gerrit Cole this season, announced Friday morning that Nick Nelson will be on the bump to start the team’s weekend series against Tampa Bay in the Bronx. Also, Mike King was recalled from the alternate site and can likely be used in a bulk role behind Nelson.

Nelson had a solid spring training and has made three appearances so far this season. He began the year by pitching 2.1 scoreless innings but was knocked around a week ago against the Rays, allowing four hits and four earned runs over 1.2 innings of work.

King has made just one appearance this season, helping preserve the bullpen by pitching six brilliant innings in relief against Toronto on April 4, allowing just one hit and no runs.
