Yankees announcers throw shade at Hunter Wendelstedt night after Aaron Boone ejection
One night after Hunter Wendelstedt made headlines for tossing Aaron Boone in the first inning, Yankees TV announcers threw some shade at the umpire during the broadcast of Tuesday’s game in the Bronx.
After Tuesday’s home plate umpire John Tumpane barked back at the A’s dugout after calling a strike on a pitch that was out of the zone, Yankees play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco joked, “Was that a Hunter Wendelstedt impression?” Right after, cameras cut to Wendelstedt manning his third base umpiring spot after being behind the plate the day before.
Cameras then scanned the first row behind the Oakland dugout, leading Ruocco to joke again, “Was it any of them, or was it someone actually in the A’s dugout?”
The joke, of course, came from Monday’s matinee where Boone was ejected despite cameras showing the Yankee manager saying nothing just before getting the hook, and replays seemed to clearly show a fan right above Boone shouting something to Wendelstedt before the ump tossed Boone. After the game, Wendelstedt insisted that the remarks that led to the ejection came from the Yankee dugout, not from a fan.
