Anthony Rizzo has played alongside Aaron Judge for a season and a half now, and after watching him hit 62 home runs, he believes he should get more in free agency than any player has ever earned.
“I think that he bet on himself on the biggest stage, in the biggest market, and did it with ease,” Rizzo said. “He should be rewarded as the highest-paid player in the game. He's the new gold standard, in my opinion.
“It’s all about market timing, for the most part. What better time to go out and hit 62 home runs, hit .300, and how he’s not a Gold Glove finalist is beyond me. Amazing defense, stole bases when he needed to, he gets on, walks more. He’s the total package.”
Rizzo has endured free agency before, but not to the level that Judge is about to experience. Still, he offered Judge some advice, while also adding that he hopes Judge’s experience still ends with him returning to New York, and being named team captain.
“Enjoy it. Enjoy the packages that teams are about to put together to try to wow him, and rightfully so,” Rizzo said.
“He deserves it all. He deserves every single thing that’s coming to him. I hope it's in a Yankee uniform for him and for the game, for baseball in general. We’re seeing people jump ship so much, that I think especially with this uniform on, just being a fan, I think the fitting thing would be for him to be doing a press conference and receiving not only the money he deserves, but also the captain title that comes with it.”
