The Yankees watched Jordan Montgomery struggle badly on Tuesday night, as the once historic starting rotation has begun to show cracks in the form of injuries and drastic drop-offs.

Luis Severino is on the IL. Montgomery continues to have periodic starts where he simply doesn’t have it. Jameson Taillon still hasn’t found his way back after a brutal month.

It has shown the team’s need for another starter, and according to SNY’s Andy Martino, Brian Cashman and company are working on getting one.

Per Martino, the Yanks “are engaged” in talks with the Reds for All-Star Luis Castillo, who shined at Yankee Stadium earlier this month. A pitcher like Castillo, who isn’t a free agent until 2024, will demand a high price tag in return, given his 2.77 ERA at just 29 years old, but the Yankees have World Series expectations, and arguably can’t get there without another big arm in the rotation.

That means likely parting with a top prospect like Oswald Peraza, who continued his Triple-A hot streak on Tuesday night by blasting a home run, but with Anthony Volpe also lurking in the minors, Peraza could represent a necessary loss to upgrade the pitching staff and the team’s chances of getting to the World Series.
