Yankees asked MLB for coaches to not have uniform numbers due to dwindling options: Report

The Yankees are just three retired numbers short of filling an entire playoff roster, most recently forever removing Paul O’Neill’s No. 21 from their circulation.

With 22 retired numbers out in Monument Park, the Yankees are simply running out of numbers. And, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, the team has asked Major League Baseball for some help.

Per Kuty, the Yanks have asked the league if their coaches can no longer be assigned numbers in order to free up more options for their players.
New York, which just gave Brett Gardner’s No. 11 to top prospect Anthony Volpe, has no numbers from 1-10 available thanks to its crowded history of championships and the players that helped win those titles.

Kuty says the league hasn’t dismissed the idea, especially considering that many managers and coaches, including Aaron Boone and Buck Showalter, do not wear their uniform tops during games.

Another amusing note by Kuty: the Yankees don’t have No. 69 as an available number for players to choose from, which doesn’t seem very nice.
