Gerrit Cole tips cap to Astros lineup: 'These are pitcher's pitches, and they're putting good swings on them'

Gerrit Cole simply had to tip his cap to the Astros lineup for their performance in Saturday night’s Yankee loss, pushing them to the brink of elimination.

What was the difference for Houston in game three?

“Their ability to hit good pitches,” Cole said. “Tonight, we made two and a half mistakes….pitch to McCormick slipped over the plate a little more than we wanted it to, but still looked like he was gonna put a good swing on it regardless.

“[Alex] Bregman had a fantastic night. Hit a 100 mph fastball that split the corner for a base hit…capitalized on a mistake changeup…we threw consecutive pitches on the edge all night, and they put really good, convictive swings on pitcher’s pitches.”

Cole was extremely complimentary about Houston’s approach against him in game three, making the Yankees pay for an error in the outfield before loading the bases on Cole in the sixth, before the Yankee ace was pulled in favor of Lou Trivino, who allowed all three inherited runners to score.

It was more than enough cushion against a Yankee offense that had no such luck replicating the Astros’ offensive success against Cole.

“These are good pitches,” Cole said. “These are pitcher's pitches. And they're putting good swings on them regardless of whether they're over the heart of the plate or not.”
