The Astros are expected to be the Yankees’ biggest roadblock towards a long-awaited return to the World Series, and Jerry Recco says any regular season success by the Bombers, no matter how historic, means little if they don’t take down Houston in the playoffs.
“To me…you can beat them every time in the regular season,” Jerry said. “It’s important for the psyche I suppose for sure. It matters in October.
“Until they do it in October in the playoffs, all this other stuff doesn’t matter to me. It’s about when they see them - and I do believe they’ll see each other in the playoffs, in the ALCS most likely - that’s when they have to do it.”
The Yanks have faced the Astros three times in October in the last seven years, and have lost all three matchups. The 2015 American League Wild Card Game, the 2017 ALCS, and the 2019 ALCS, which ended in heartbreak thanks to a Jose Altuve walk-off in game six to clinch the series. Of course, Houston’s infamous sign-stealing scandal placed a lot of what-ifs on those two series, but the Astros are a formidable foe once again, and with the Yankees constantly carrying a championship-or-bust mentality, regular season wins won’t be remembered if it doesn’t end in a title.
And to win a title, they will likely have to finally take down those heated Astros in a playoff series.
“In 2019, they won 103 games. Do you remember it? Nope,” Jerry said. “When you’re about winning championships, 2009 to now is now a long time for the Yankees. It’s 13 years.”
