If the Yankees want to achieve their ultimate goal of winning a World Series, they will likely have to figure out a way to wake their bats up against the Astros.
The Bombers are tops in all of baseball in home runs and OPS heading into the weekend, but after two losses in Thursday’s doubleheader against Houston, the Yanks are now batting just .151 against their rivals in seven games this season. That’s the franchise’s all-time lowest team batting average in a season against one opponent, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The Yanks went 2-5 against the Astros this season, their head-to-head matchups mercifully coming to an end, perhaps until October.
The Yankees were no-hit by Houston last month in the Bronx, and needed a pair of late comebacks to earn a series split at home. But the Astros pitching has overmatched the Yanks in Houston, a painful reminder of the hitting struggles in the 2017 ALCS that led to a 3-2 series lead turning into an elimination in seven games.
Assuming the two teams meet again this postseason, that will have to change if the Yanks want to avoid being eliminated by Houston for the fourth time since 2015.
