The Yankees and Brian Cashman have unsurprisingly agreed on a new contract, but Tiki wonders why the news was released, or that an extension was even agreed upon, before the team locked down its top priority of the offseason.
“When it’s all said and done, it means he will have been the Yankees general manager for 29 seasons,” Tiki said. “There have been some championships, but there hasn’t been one since 2009.
“To me, my big takeaway after seeing this news was, ‘OK, great for Cashman, but where the hell is the Aaron Judge conversation?’”
Sure, a GM is important to signing a free agent, but Cashman had already been operating without a contract anyway, and had done it before in his Yankee tenure. So Tiki would have liked to see a Judge deal announced before Cashman’s deal.
“It’s almost tone deaf for the Yankees to start championing a guy who most Yankees fans could do with or without,” Tiki said. “He’s there or not, really, it’s what he does. And what he needs to do right now is sign Aaron Judge. So why announce Cashman’s deal before you even have deep conversations with Aaron Judge?
“The focus of the Yankees should and needs to be Aaron Judge, and maybe it gets done today…but the question will be, ‘Does Aaron Judge trust the forever GM of the Yankees to do right by him?’”
