With one month left in the regular season, Brandon Tierney says Brian Cashman needs to be under close watch by ownership, and his job as the longest-tenured GM in baseball needs to be very much on the line.
“Brian Cashman, at least if I’m running the Yankees, has four weeks to earn an extension,” BT said.
“I can be really mean and say even if they play really well over the next four weeks, he doesn’t deserve an extension…Brian Cashman should be hanging by a thread.”
BT doesn’t think Cashman deserves the benefit of the doubt given a long history of failed trades and free agent signings after overseeing three championship teams to begin his tenure, which BT says should be credited to previous front office minds that preceded him.
“Ever since they won the championships, we know who built the team, and it wasn’t Brian Cashman. It was Stick Michael and Bon Watson,” BT said. “Post-dynasty, whether it’s Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Sonny Gray, Jacob Ellsbury…Donaldson’s dopey two-year deal…let’s be very clear about this. Brian Cashman has not earned the right to rebuild this team the way this team needs to be rebuilt.”
