Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone expressed their belief in Josh Donaldson at last week’s postmortem press conference at Yankee Stadium, and at the GM meetings on Tuesday, Cashman again said that the veteran third baseman will be manning the hot corner in 2023.
“I don't think it goes away that quickly,” Cashman said of Donaldson’s offensive struggles in 2022. “That's basically it. I think he still has game left. "The bat is better than what he showed. We believe that. I can easily say he's a two-way force, in my opinion.”
Donaldson was certainly a one-way force in 2022, playing his typically stellar defense at third base, but his bat left a lot to be desired. His .682 OPS was the lowest of his career, and it got worse in the postseason, when he struck out multiple times in seven straight games, tying a playoff record.
But Donaldson will be back with the Yanks in 2023 in what will be the final year of a four-year, $92 million deal.
