The scuffling Yankees look nothing like the team that was rivaling the 1998 squad earlier in the season. In fact, Sal believes they look more like the team that many expected them to be following an offseason with few big-time moves.
Now, the current slide is a reminder that the team could have had much more consistent performers and bigger impact players, but instead, are dealing with badly struggling offseason additions like Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson.
“They could have gone out there and signed Max Scherzer,” Sal said. “They could have got Buck Showalter. They could have signed Carlos Correa. They didn’t do any of the above. They only traded for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson and kept Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman.
Why would they make any changes now?”
The lack of moves this past offseason will also make it tougher to improve the team this offseason, which will be a major talking point if the Yanks continue to struggle and suffer another early playoff exit. Stuck with another year of Donaldson’s contract, the Yankees will be forced to look at the lack of moves this past winter, instead of looking back fondly at a historic regular season.
“They’ll tweak the roster a little best they can, maybe you see [Anthony] Volpe up here…I think you’ll see minor moves,” Sal said.
“What kind of big moves can they make? They had an opportunity this offseason. That to me is the writing on the wall.”
