Yankees call up Miguel Andujar, while Gio Urshela reportedly avoids IL

The Yankees have called up Miguel Andujar, but reports indicate that it doesn’t necessarily mean bad news for Gio Urshela.

While the Yankees confirmed that Andujar is being recalled from Triple-A, Jack Curry of the YES Network reported that Urshela, who underwent an MRI on his knee on Thursday, will not be heading to the IL. Urshela was removed from Thursday’s loss to the Astros after making a diving stop in the eighth inning, with Aaron Boone saying Urshela’s knee had swelled “quite a bit.”

Andujar, who had been recovering from an injury of his own, hit two home runs for the RailRiders on Thursday, and was 6-for-13 with three long balls in Triple-A. His performance at the place suggests the nerve issue in his right hand that sidelined him during spring training is no longer an issue.

The Yankees have been working Andujar at multiple positions, playing third and first base on Thursday after playing left field the previous two nights. He could be used as a temporary fill-in for Urshela, should he indeed be avoiding an IL stint, and could slide into left field afterward if the Yanks want to try a new face out there with Brett Gardner and Clint Frazier both badly struggling. Gardner is batting .200, while Frazier is hitting .151. Both have an OPS below .620.

Andujar burst onto the scene in 2018, hitting .297 with 27 home runs in 149 games, while ripping 47 doubles. He struggled in 2020 after missing nearly all of 2019 with a shoulder injury, and his infield defense has been a liability since his rookie season.

Albert Abreu was sent down as the team’s corresponding move.
